Flight Line

Flying Model Airplanes in the San Antonio Area.  We have a group of pilots who plan on getting out and flying quite a bit in 2016.   We’re going to keep this page updated (along with our calender) with what we’re up to, so if you’d like to join us, read on!.

Our gang is comprised of mostly novice and mid-level pilots who fly a lot of foam airplanes and park flyers.  We’re out to just have a good, safe, and fun day of flying model aircraft.   However, we have some good friends who are excellent pilots and modelers that are super cool and always willing to help out us new guys.  It’s a good vibe!  We’re not part of any of the clubs or organizations (other than AMA) and we prefer to keep it basic and open to people that want to give it a try.

Our goal is simple:  With the advancements in technology (such as Horizon Hobby’s “as3x and SAFE”) there has never been a better time to learn to fly.  Let’s get up in the air and start having a good time!

Jim Rice is bringing a gas engine biplane on a buddy-box (trainer) for us novice and foamy guys to try our hand flying a high quality wood airplane.

So bring a plane with lights if you have it, $5 to pitch in on food, and whatever beverage you enjoy.  See you there!

We got together quickly on this one and it was our first time out with some decent wind.  I was told early on that if you want to fly in S. Texas, you better learn how to fly in the wind.  A few crashes, but that just made it more fun.

I’m not knocking balsa planes, but Hervey dive-bombed his Apprentice right into the middle of the lake … and then drove it back to shore.  Looks like it needs a new wing, but that’s about it.  A wood plane would have been totally destroyed.

Don’t think we tore up anything on this trip.

Couldn't have asked for a nicer evening.

We had a great time, weather was perfect, and the field was in great shape … especially if you consider it was underwater on Saturday.  About 7 of us showed up and ended up flying even after the sun went down with the help of a bunch of LEDs.

I got to maiden a VisionAire and it flew just about perfect right out of the box.  They are sure making it easy: I downloaded the setup files for the plane onto my DX8, had a couple of experienced guys that were there check things over just to make sure everything looked good, then taxied it out and flew several packs without incident.  Can’t wait for the Night VisionAires to get here in March; we have 4 on order – one’s mine;)
